solar world wide pod – 1st look

It has been a while but I finally decided to upgrade my pod, as those of you who I fish with know, I have been using a Fox pod for a while. This pod, the Fox Stalker, did me proud for a very long time and is still in top top condition. Indeed, if it were not for my Delkims I would still be using that pod. The major issue that one will experience with Delkims and the Fox series of pods is that due to the oval buzz bar shape the antenna and now the new shape Delkim hangers tend to get in the way of the buzzbar. So, whilst the buzzbar is as lightweight as could be it starts to get really fidddly when you want to put yourhangers etc on. I have tried spacers, quick locks etc but to no avail, it was either change the pod, or change the buzzers and I quite liked my delks.

1st Look – PB Products Line Aligner

In previous posts I have espoused the benefits of line aligners and normally thy are formed out of shrink tube. Shrink tube has the advantage of being very tough and will mould its self to any shape and will reform its self if bent out of shape. It is not all sweetness and light however, shrink tube by its very nature needs heat to be able to shrink. Even the lowest temperature tubing needs 90 Deg C ( steam from a boiling kettle) and some need far higher ( ie shrink tube used for electrical purposes). Now most modern carp anglers if they are going over night will carry a kettle and stove if only for a brew however for the mobile angler or the younger angler getting bank side access to boiling water may pose a challenge. The KD rig

The KD rig was designed by Kenny Dorsett and my 1st exposure to it was when I was experimenting with a standard knotless knot rig in order to present particles to what I thought were easy to catch carp. I wanted to present the hook in such a way as to hook them differently to how most anglers were catching them due to mouth damage. I thought if I could hook them in a different place I would have a better chance of landing them. A few months later I discovered that I had “re invented” the KD rig. I also originally started to put the weight on the hair ( rather then the hook link) as I normally use PVA sticks and was getting annoyed by moving the counter weight along the hook link every time I attached a new stick. Moving the weight to the hair make the PVA stick sit far far better and eliminated the irritation of loosing the weight at some point ( making your bait sit 6-8″ from the bottom)

The rig is not just for particle fishing but in my humble opinion works best for small baits and it is worth noting that normally it is used with buoyant baits, if you are not using buoyant baits then you can dispense with the weight on the hair. Continue reading “The KD rig”

Dear all

I noticed that there was a an extra DNS request per page every time you navigated around the site, a quick google led me to a discussion forum hosted by wordpress themselves.

After reading the discourse here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/355170 about AddToAny I am not happy about how the plugin works and have decided to pull it from the site. After reading Futta’s blog I decided to swap over to “Sociable” which seems to have all the same functionality. As it stands I am not happy with any plugin collecting information on my readers at all even if it is only a tracking cookie without letting me know 1st.

Please share this sites articles on Facebook, stumbleupon and re tweet my tweets but I really dont want to track any of my users or allow any 3rd party to track them.

Delkim Standard Plus long term review

It has been a long time since I used a Heron style alarm, and recently ( whilst clearing through the loft) i found one of my old bite alarms. I marvelled at the technology that we used to use which in those days was, in effect, little more than a bent wire, a resistor, LED and buzzer. How things have changed. When I was a kid I remember opening a Christmas present one year to find a pair of Optonic bite alarms and being so proud and certain that I was going to catch more fish, alas it was not to be 🙂 the alarms don’t catch the fish the angler does. Still try telling that to an 11 year old.

Eating on the bank part 2 – dried food ahead

As a followup to the last bit of culinary advice I gave, I thought I would do a followup. Whilst I appreciate that if you are doing a long carp session such as a week in France ( or even 5 years) you might want to eat fresh food, for a quick overnighter freeze dried food cant be beaten. Then again our troops exist on these kinds of foods for months at a time and they seem to be doing perfectly fine. Korda Krusha review

It has been a while since I did a review and so I thought I would take a quick look at an item of tackle that has really made my fishing easier, the korda krusha. Many of you may know that I love PVA bags almost every time I cast there is a bag or pva stick on the end as not only does it increase attraction it also protects your hook point and ensures that you hook is not masked by weed or chod.

Due to the above I really love making up stick mixes but disliked crumbing boilies. Whilst you can fish a stick mix that is completely different to your boilie I do like to ensure that there is a healthy amount of crumbled boilie in the stick as well. Depending on how hard your boilies are this can be done with your fingers but after 10-15 boilies you hands will quickly tire. In the past I used to prepare in the kitchen the night before with the blender but this can be problematic as you never know how much boilie crumb you might need.

The original CV safety rig

Well after a previous post indicating how to make the “CV Safety Rig” with lead core I thought I would show you how it was meant to look. As I have now found a reliable source for “the bit” ( the black piece of curved metal in the pic above) I though I would make one up to show you all how it should look. Come back later for an in depth look at how to make one of these rigs from the components.

Note that this is the only time is it acceptable to super glue a bead to lead core, and if you make one from the picture above note that you only superglue the bottom bead. The top bead should be free to move and should slide freely over the join from leadcore to your mainline.

Barbed hooks versus barbless hooks – which one is better for carp fishing

This is a subject which has been debated for many years and both barbed and barbless hooks certainly have their place in modern carp fishing. I believe that on the majority of waters and in the majority of angling situations, barbless hooks are better for the carp. Most fisheries these days have a rule governing the type of hooks that are allowed, I would say that the majority of waters have a barbless only rule, but some still rule in favour of barbed hooks – which is correct ?
